Guns Before Butter

On 16 July 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated in the Jornada del Muerto desert in New Mexico. J. Robert Oppenheimer, so-called ‘father of the atomic bomb,’ later wrote that upon witnessing the test he was reminded of a quote from the Hindu holy book Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
